Barry's art offers a conceptual contemplation on light, time, natural spaces in our contemporary world, and the nature of photography itself. With a depth of talent and indomitable commitment to craft, Barry transforms intriguing landscapes into exquisitely illuminated stages--what he calls "poetic gestures". Seeing his work evokes the feeling of witnessing a magnificent rainbow, a field of fireflies, or a midnight bolt of lightning. Barry is the lightning. His images are the accompanying energy and its reverberating thunder.
 
Barry Underwood is an acclaimed artist, educator, mentor, friend, and perpetual seeker. Recognition has flowed his way including the Ohio Governor’s Award for the Arts, the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award, the Cleveland Arts Prize, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Clinic, Rockefeller Family Art Collection, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others.
