8 x Two
• New work by G.M. Donley •
Open through June 3, 2026
Foothill Galleries of the Photo-Succession presents 8 x Two, an exhibition of cinematically horizontal photo-composites by G.M. Donley through May of 2026.
A peripatetic Clevelander, Greg hikes, climbs, rides, and strolls throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond, ingesting the culture, lore, history, landscapes, and urban rhythms into his visual documents. Prolific in his making, Greg continues to build on his decades-long Place/Time project of horizontal strolling composite photographs typically framed at 8 inches high by 6 or 8 feet long. In 8 x Two, sixteen new works in this series will be presented at Foothill Galleries. The exhibition is organized as eight pairs of images, with each pairing revealing certain common threads, tracing formal and thematic elements often belied by their disparate locales. “As I was preparing for this show, certain pieces seemed to keep sidling up to others” Donley explains. “That got me thinking about what always happens in galleries or museums—works that share the same wall space can’t help but converse with each other whether or not that’s necessarily the intention. This exhibition idea is about encouraging them to talk.”
So, in 8 x Two, scenes of Cleveland are paired with Prague, Tremont with Venice, Ohio City with Berlin, mountains with buildings, graffiti-covered concrete with tunnels chiseled through limestone. Greg has a boots-on-the-ground commitment to artistic immersion. He moves himself in place physically as well as historically, thoughtfully, intellectually. Trained as an urban planner, skilled as a writer, and long practiced as a photographer, Greg’s artistic vision invokes a deep consideration for the cause and effect of his and our place in the world.
This is the fourth solo exhibition of Donley’s work at Foothill since the gallery opened in 2016. Donley reflects “it’s hard to believe Foothill opened more than ten years ago. Michael has done a lot with this and other projects to support photography in the Cleveland area, and I feel privileged and grateful to exhibit my work again at his gallery.”
